No single tool replaces all of Ahrefs for less money, so the best Ahrefs alternatives depend on the job you use it for. Semrush is the closest all-in-one swap. SE Ranking matches Ahrefs Lite's price with far more daily rank tracking, and Moz Pro starts lower. Majestic does backlinks, Mangools does keyword research on a budget, and Screaming Frog does technical audits. For your own site, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free. Prices below are as of October 2026.
That last point matters more than most comparison posts admit. If you pay for Ahrefs mainly to look at your own site, the search engines give you better data for that job at no cost. The paid tools earn their money when you need to look at other people's sites: competitors' backlinks, competitors' keywords, the pages ranking above you.
Who should switch from Ahrefs, and who should stay
Ahrefs is a strong product. It describes its crawler as the world's second-most active, and its backlink and keyword data are the benchmark every tool below gets measured against. If you use four or five of its tools every week, switching usually means paying for two or three products to cover the same ground.
The reasons people leave are mostly about how the plans are built. On Ahrefs' pricing page, as of October 2026:
- Lite costs $129 a month and includes 1,000 credits per user each month. Standard ($249) is the first plan with unlimited credits.
- Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan, from Lite up to Enterprise.
- Content Explorer and the broken backlinks report start on Standard.
- There are no discounts, and refunds are generally not issued. Ahrefs says so plainly in its FAQ. Paying annually saves up to 17%.
- Extra users cost $40 to $80 a month each, depending on the plan.
So switching makes sense if you hit the Lite credit limit and cannot justify $249, if you need daily rank movements, if you only use one part of the product, or if you mostly check your own site. Stay with Ahrefs if you are an agency or in-house team that lives in Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer every day, because the stitched-together stack often costs about the same and gives you two logins to manage instead of one.
Two cheaper doors into Ahrefs itself are worth knowing before you leave. The Starter plan is $29 a month. Ahrefs Free (the product formerly called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) gives limited free access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for websites you can verify. We cover it with the other free tools further down.

How we picked and checked these tools
We started from the jobs people use Ahrefs for, then chose the tool that does each job well. Every price, limit and feature in this post comes from the vendor's own pricing or help page, opened on 9 October 2026. We do not use affiliate links, and nobody paid to be included.
We did not benchmark the accuracy of each tool's backlink or keyword database. Every vendor claims its index is large: Semrush says its link database has over 43 trillion links, and Moz says it covers more than 40 trillion. Those figures are counted differently and cannot be compared directly. If data accuracy decides it for you, run the same three competitor domains through two free trials and compare what each one finds.
Two tools that appear on most lists, Ubersuggest and Serpstat, are missing here because their pricing pages did not show plans we could verify on the day we checked.
All-in-one replacements: Semrush, SE Ranking and Moz Pro
These three cover backlinks, keyword research, rank tracking and site audits in one login, which is the closest thing to a like-for-like swap.
Semrush
Semrush's pricing page starts with an SEO plan at $139 a month ($117.33 a month billed yearly). It monitors 5 websites, tracks 500 keywords daily, and includes basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit, plus AI search tracking. The Starter plan at $199 adds fuller keyword and competitor tools and 50 AI prompts tracked daily. Pro+ at $299 raises tracking to 1,500 keywords and adds historical data.
Semrush also has a free plan with 10 reports a day across its main tools, and most paid plans come with a free trial.
Choose Semrush when you want one platform as broad as Ahrefs and daily rank tracking matters to you. Extra users start at $45 a month, so price out the whole team, not one seat. We are keeping this short on purpose: a full Semrush versus Ahrefs comparison is its own decision.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking's Core plan costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed yearly. That buys 10 projects, one manager seat, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, audits of up to 250,000 pages a month, and what SE Ranking calls "unlimited keyword, competitor, backlink research". Growth, at $279, moves to 30 projects, 3 seats, 5,000 tracked keywords and historical data for the life of the project. Core keeps six months of history.
There is a 14-day free trial with no card required, and annual subscribers get free migration from another tool.
It suits people who manage several small sites, such as a freelancer with a handful of UK or Indian clients, and want daily tracking without paying for each extra project.
Moz Pro
Moz Pro has the gentlest entry point of the three: a Starter plan at $49 a month for one website. Standard is $99 ($79 yearly) with 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords, 150 keyword queries and 5,000 backlink queries a month. Medium, at $179, raises keyword queries to 5,000 a month, and that jump is the one heavy keyword researchers should notice.
Moz offers a free trial, and a free Moz Community account gives limited access to Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer and the MozBar extension.
Moz is the sensible choice for one business site that needs authority metrics and tracking, without paying for capacity it will not use. If you are moving from Ahrefs, note that Moz's Domain Authority and Ahrefs' Domain Rating are different scores on different scales; our explainer on Moz DA versus Ahrefs DR covers why the numbers do not match.
Backlink research: Majestic
If backlinks are the only reason you open Ahrefs, a link specialist is cheaper than a full suite. Majestic's plans start with Lite at $49.99 a month ($41.67 a month billed yearly), which covers its Fresh Index: backlinks Majestic has seen in the past 120 days. Pro, at $99.99, adds the Historic Index, which holds every backlink Majestic has seen since 2006, along with Majestic's domain comparison reports.
Majestic's prices exclude VAT, which matters for UK buyers, and Lite and Pro come with a 7-day money-back guarantee for first-time customers. API access needs the $399.99 API plan.
Use Majestic for link prospecting, for checking a site you are about to buy, or for seeing how a competitor's link profile has changed over the years. Keyword research and rank tracking are not what it is built for.
For links pointing at your own site, start with the free reports in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools first, covered below.
Keyword research on a budget: Mangools
Mangools bundles five small tools: KWFinder for keyword research, LinkMiner for backlinks, SERPChecker, SiteProfiler and SERPWatcher for rank tracking. Basic costs $37.70 a month billed yearly ($452.40 a year). It allows 100 keyword research requests every 24 hours, 200 tracked keywords updated weekly and 100,000 backlinks a month. Premium ($52.70 a month, yearly) raises those limits, and Agency ($97.70 a month, yearly) is the plan with daily rank updates.
Mangools offers a 48-hour money-back guarantee rather than a trial, and every plan includes its AI Search Watcher with 500 monitored prompts.
Solo founders and content writers whose main Ahrefs habit is finding keywords and checking whether they are worth chasing get the most from it. Whichever tool you use, read difficulty scores against your own site's strength. Our guide to what keyword difficulty measures explains why a KD of 30 can be easy for one site and out of reach for a new one.
Rank tracking: check the update frequency first
Rank tracking is where plans differ the most, and the gap is not in the headline price. It is in how often the numbers refresh.

| Entry plan | Tracked keywords | Updates |
|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking Core ($129) | 2,000 | Daily |
| Ahrefs Lite ($129) | 750 | Weekly |
| Semrush SEO ($139) | 500 | Daily |
| Mangools Basic ($37.70, yearly) | 200 | Weekly |
Moz Standard includes 300 tracked keywords; its pricing page does not state the update frequency.
Weekly updates are enough for most small businesses, because rankings for a 20-page site rarely need daily attention. Daily updates matter when you publish often, run an ecommerce site where a drop costs sales that day, or report to clients who check every morning.
One honest caution: a rank tracker reports the position it saw for the location and device you set. Search Console's Performance report shows the average position your pages actually got in real searches, along with clicks, impressions and click-through rate. Use the tracker for competitors and daily movement, and Search Console for the truth about your own pages.
Site audits: Screaming Frog
Screaming Frog's SEO Spider is desktop software that crawls your site and reports broken links, errors, redirects, duplicate pages, page titles and meta data, among many other checks. It is free for up to 500 URLs. A licence, which allows larger crawls and advanced features, costs $279 or £199 a year per user and lasts one year.
Buy the licence once your site passes 500 URLs, or when you need to crawl a site before a redesign or migration. A year costs less than three months of Ahrefs Lite. It runs on your own computer, and Screaming Frog notes that the largest crawl you can run depends on the memory and storage you give it.
For small sites, the free version plus Bing's Site Scan is usually enough. Our technical SEO audit guide walks through what to check in a crawl and in what order.
Keyword research to published content: Project Rankup (our product)
This is our own product, so weigh what follows accordingly. Project Rankup fits one job on this list: going from keyword research to articles that are written and ready to publish. It is a content platform, not an Ahrefs replacement.
What it does for that job:
- Reads your own site and two or three competitor homepages once, so keyword ideas start from what you actually sell.
- Pulls volume and keyword difficulty for those ideas, tags each one top, middle or bottom of funnel, and judges difficulty against your own domain's authority, so a new site is steered toward keywords it can win.
- Filters out off-topic ideas, then plans them onto a content calendar.
- Writes articles with the direct answer near the top, modular sections, FAQ and Article schema, cited sources and internal links to your own pages, and can audit and repair existing posts.
- Tracks your pages' clicks and positions through a Google Search Console connection.
What it does not do: it has no backlink index, so you cannot research a competitor's links in it. It does no link building. It does not track AI visibility or share of voice in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. It targets 10 countries, including the US, UK and India. If backlinks are part of your Ahrefs routine, you still need one of the tools above.
There is a free tier, and paid plans are listed on our pricing page. We are not quoting a price here because our billing is still being finalised. The fair test is simple: it only makes sense if writing content is your bottleneck, not data.
The free stack: Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Ahrefs Free

Three free tools cover a surprising share of what small sites use Ahrefs for. All of them ask you to verify that you own the site.
Google Search Console is Google's free service for monitoring how your site performs in search. Its Performance report shows the queries that bring people to you, with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. Its Links report shows who links to you, with two limits Google states itself: it shows a sample of links rather than every one, and tables stop at 1,000 rows. It also does not say whether a link is nofollow. Our guide to using Google Search Console for SEO covers the reports worth checking each week.
Bing Webmaster Tools is the free tool most Ahrefs alternative lists skip, and it does more than people expect:
- The Backlinks report shows referring domains and anchor text for up to 1,500 domains, with up to 10,000 backlinks each, exportable to CSV. Bing calls it a representative set, not a complete profile.
- It lets you compare your backlink profile with up to two other sites, which makes it a free, if limited, competitor link checker.
- Keyword Research shows Bing search volumes and trends, filtered by country, language and device, for any period in the last six months. Remember these are Bing's numbers, not Google's.
- Site Scan is an on-demand audit for common technical issues.
- An AI Performance report shows how often your pages are cited in supported AI experiences. Bing notes that a citation is not a click.
Ahrefs Free gives free access to Ahrefs' Site Audit, which checks more than 170 technical and on-page issues, and to Site Explorer for your own verified sites: the pages and keywords that bring you traffic, and who links to you. If you like Ahrefs' interface and only ever look at your own domain, this may be all you need.
Add Screaming Frog's free 500-URL crawl and the total is $0. The gap is competitor research. None of these tools shows you a competitor's full keyword list or full backlink profile.
Three stacks for three budgets
Put together, the pieces above make three sensible stacks for three common situations.
An early-stage startup in Bengaluru or Pune with one site and no budget. Use Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs Free and Screaming Frog's free crawl. Total: $0. When you start publishing every week and need keyword research, add Mangools Basic at $37.70 a month, billed yearly. Our SEO for startups guide covers what to do first while the domain has little authority.
A UK local business with one site. Moz Pro Starter at $49 a month covers one website, with Search Console for real click data. If you start building links, add Majestic Lite at $49.99 a month plus VAT. The pair costs $98.99 before VAT, still under Ahrefs Lite, and you can drop Majestic in the months when no link work is happening.
A US freelancer or small agency running several client sites. SE Ranking Core at $129 a month gives 10 projects and daily tracking on 2,000 keywords, against 750 weekly on Ahrefs Lite at the same price. Add a Screaming Frog licence at $279 a year for client audits on bigger sites. If clients pay for link building, keep Majestic Lite or move up to Semrush.
Whatever you choose, decide the plan before the tool. A clear SEO plan tells you whether you need competitor data at all this quarter, and that one decision often removes half the subscriptions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Ahrefs for free?
Yes, within limits. Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, gives free access to Site Audit and Site Explorer for websites you can verify that you own. It does not let you research other sites in depth. Ahrefs also lists free single-purpose tools, such as a backlink checker, on its website.
Is Semrush better than Ahrefs?
Neither is better for everyone. Both are broad suites with backlink, keyword, rank tracking and audit tools. As of October 2026, Semrush's entry plan costs $139 a month and updates 500 tracked keywords daily, while Ahrefs Lite costs $129 and updates 750 weekly. Pick on the job you do most often, then test both on the same domains.
What are the cons of Ahrefs?
Going by Ahrefs' own pricing page, the drawbacks are cost and limits. Lite caps usage at 1,000 credits per user each month, rank tracking updates weekly on every plan, and some tools such as Content Explorer start on the $249 Standard plan. Ahrefs does not run discounts and generally does not issue refunds.
Does Ahrefs have a free trial?
Not in the usual sense. Ahrefs' pricing FAQ says it never runs discounts and points website owners to Ahrefs Free for limited free access instead. The cheapest paid way in is the Starter plan at $29 a month, which gives extended access to Site Explorer, Site Audit and Keywords Explorer.
What is the best free alternative to Ahrefs for backlinks?
For your own site, use Google Search Console's Links report and Bing Webmaster Tools together, since each one shows only a sample of your links. For competitors, Bing lets you compare your backlink profile with up to two other sites for free. Moz's free Community account also includes limited Link Explorer access.
What are the 5 best SEO tools?
For most small businesses: Google Search Console for real search data, Bing Webmaster Tools for free backlinks and keywords, Screaming Frog for crawling, one paid suite such as Semrush, SE Ranking or Ahrefs for competitor research, and a keyword tool like Mangools if the suite is out of budget.
